    Just as it sounds, an ENT specialist is a doctor of ear, nose and throat. So, they specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the ears, nose, and throat.

    They’re also known as otolaryngologists and can also address issues with the head and neck. The training they receive allows them to be able to perform surgeries in these areas like tonsillectomies and sinus surgeries.     On this page we answer the question; what are ENT symptoms? In particular, we look into the symptoms that may warrant a visit to an ENT specialist in Singapore. But first;

    What is a Common ENT Problem?

    There are several ENT problems that your ENT specialist in Singapore deals with on a regular basis. However, there are a few that tend to stand out which is why many people ask; what is a common ENT problem?

    The four most common problems that ENT specialists help with regularly include ear infections, sinusitis, strep throat and sleep apnea. Depending on how severe these conditions affect you, they can not only cause discomfort but also impact your daily life.

    A few other notable and frequent issues that ENT specialists deal with include hearing loss, tonsillitis and allergies. Hearing loss can be sudden or gradual.

    Depending on the severity, it can significantly impact the quality of life. Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. Often it leads to a sore throat and may make swallowing difficult.

    Allergies can trigger varied symptoms ranging from sneezing to postnasal drip and congestion etc. It can affect both adults and children.

    ENT specialists are also frequently seen for vertigo, acid reflux and even dysphagia. Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or dizziness which can be triggered by inner ear problems.

    Acid and gastric reflux are known to affect the throat and may trigger symptoms like heartburn and difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia. Dysphagia may be due to various underlying issues including neurological conditions.

    In emergencies, you may be referred to an ENT specialist in Singapore due to issues like foreign bodies in your ear, nose or throat, epistaxis (nosebleeds), stridor (noisy breathing), facial bone fractures and trauma. Emergency conditions demand immediate attention as they cannot only be alarming but also potentially, life-threatening if not addressed promptly by a qualified ENT specialist.

    What are ENT Symptoms?

    As already explained, ENT symptoms encompass a wide range of issues that affect the ears, nose, and throat. Usually, while your Primary Care Physician (PCP) can help with managing these symptoms, they will refer you to an ENT specialist in Singapore if they believe that you need specialized care. Here are some of the most common symptoms that warrant the attention of an ENT specialist;

    ·       Runny Nose

    A runny nose is also medically known as rhinorrhea. It is one of the most common symptoms of many ENT conditions like allergies, colds, or sinus infections.

    It gets triggered when the nasal tissues produce excessive mucus. This may lead to a discharge from the nose and the symptoms may also come with sneezing, itching, and congestion.

    ·       Sore Throat

    A sore throat is another fairly common symptom of many ENT conditions. It can be triggered by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or acid reflux.

    This ENT symptom is characterized by pain, irritation, or scratchiness in the throat. So, experiencing it may make it difficult to swallow. Sore throats can also be accompanied by other symptoms like fever, cough, or swollen glands.

    ·       Coughing or Sneezing

    Coughing and sneezing are ENT symptoms that mostly occur as a result of respiratory infections, allergies or irritants. These actions help to expel mucus, allergens, or foreign particles from the respiratory tract.

    Persistent or severe coughing or sneezing shouldn’t be taken casually though. They may indicate an underlying ENT condition that requires medical attention.

    ·       Ear Pain

    This condition is also known as otalgia. It can occur due to various ENT conditions; including ear infections, trauma, or Eustachian tube dysfunction.

    It is often described as sharp, dull, or throbbing pain in the ear. Other symptoms such as ear discharge, hearing loss, or fever may also be present.

    ·       Hearing Loss

    Hearing loss can occur suddenly. Also, it can happen gradually and may affect one or both ears. It also doesn’t have a specific cause.

    This means that it can be triggered by various ENT conditions, including aging, noise exposure, infections, or ototoxic medications. Hearing loss can range from mild to severe. Also, it can significantly impact communication and quality of life.

    ·       Snoring

    Snoring is a common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a condition characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete blockage of the upper airway during sleep.

    Snoring occurs when the airflow through the nose and throat is partially obstructed. This obstruction is what leads to vibrations of the soft tissues in the throat. Snoring cannot only disrupt sleep. It may also be a sign of an underlying ENT condition which is why you may be referred to an ENT specialist in Singapore for persistent snoring.

    ·       Obstructive Sleep Apnea

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when the muscles in the throat relax and block the airway during sleep. This action causes breathing to stop and start repeatedly.

    OSA can lead to daytime fatigue. It can also cause irritability, and even worse increase your risk of cardiovascular problems if left untreated. Symptoms of OSA are varied. However, they mostly manifest as loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches.

    ·       Difficulty Breathing or Mouth Breathing

    Difficulty breathing or mouth breathing also doesn’t have a single specific cause. It is a condition that may occur due to various ENT conditions, including nasal congestion, deviated septum, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.

    It can lead to snoring, dry mouth, bad breath, and fatigue. Treatment for difficulty breathing or mouth breathing is varied. Essentially, it depends on the underlying cause and may include medications, nasal sprays, or surgical intervention.

    Closing Thoughts

    There is a wide range of symptoms that warrant the attention of an ENT specialist. So, if advised to see one, make arrangements to do it as soon as possible. This is important as some conditions are best managed when caught early.
